Diabetes Mellitus has become a major concern in our society. It’s a killer disease which not just affects the quantity but also cripples the quality of life.

Ayurvedic vision to Diabetes Mellitus

Ayurveda explains Diabetes Mellitus under the title of “Madhumeha”. Madhu refers to honey like and meha refers to excessive urination. Thus, the name suggests the major symptom of diabetes mellitus i.e. honey like urine is excreted. The meaning of the Greek word “Diabetes Mellitus” is also the same – Diabetes meaning excessive urination and Mellitus meaning honeyed.

Prameha is a state of passing high quantity of turbid urine. It’s a condition which incorporates various types of urinary diseases with common etiology, symptomatology, prognosis and to certain extent treatment. The worsen state of Prameha leads to Madhumeha.


Madhumeha can be categorized under lifestyle disorders. Common reasons to develop this health condition include both improper dietetic and regimen practices. A few causes have been listed below divided into two broad categories:

Causes related to diet -

  • Consuming curd and its derivatives in an inappropriate manner such as inappropriate season, time of the day, combination etc.
